The Simple Gardener

From Curious to Committed: How Tower Gardening Changed Our Family

Back in 2012, our family made an investment that ended up creating a big ripple in our lives, we brought a Tower Garden into our home.

At the time, we were simply curious. We wanted a way to grow our own food, to feel a little more connected to what we were eating, and honestly… to see if we could actually keep plants alive (no small feat for many of us!). What we didn’t expect was how much it would impact not just what we ate, but how we lived.

At first, it was exciting just to watch things grow. Seeds turning into leafy greens right before our eyes felt almost magical. There’s something incredibly grounding about witnessing that process up close, especially for kids. It became more than a garden; it became a daily touchpoint. A moment to check in, water, observe, and appreciate.

And then came the real shift: we started eating what we grew. Fresh lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, harvested right from our own tower, began showing up in our meals. Food tasted better. It felt better. And somehow, when you’ve had a hand in growing it, you value it differently. There’s pride in that. There’s connection.

Over time, this simple system quietly shaped our habits. We became more intentional about what we put on our plates. The kids became more curious about food. Conversations changed. It wasn’t about “eat your veggies” anymore, it was, “look what we grew.”

And beyond the food, it gave us something else that’s hard to measure but easy to feel: a sense of empowerment. The ability to grow your own food, no matter the season, no matter the space, shifts your mindset. It reminds you that small actions at home can have a meaningful impact.

Looking back, bringing a Tower Garden into our lives in 2012 was one of those decisions that didn’t seem monumental at the time—but absolutely became one.

If you’ve ever been curious about growing your own food, or you’re looking for a simple way to bring more fresh, nutrient-dense produce into your home, I’d love to share more about our experience and help you explore if it’s a fit for you.
